Kazakhstan remains a country where independent journalism faces serious challenges. Despite constitutional guarantees of freedom of speech, in practice, independent media, journalists, and civil activists experience pressure, censorship, and persecution by the authorities.

Censorship and Media Control

In Kazakhstan, the vast majority of television channels, newspapers, and online publications are either directly controlled by the state or owned by individuals affiliated with the government. As a result, information about corruption, human rights violations, and protests is either suppressed or presented in a way that benefits the authorities.

The main tools of censorship include:

    •    Blocking independent websites and social media. Many independent media outlets, such as Ratel.kz and Respublika, have been repeatedly blocked. Access to information is often restricted during protests and crisis situations.

    •    Intimidation and criminal prosecution of journalists. In recent years, there has been increasing pressure on independent journalists. They are summoned for interrogations, accused of “spreading false information,” and sometimes even face criminal charges.

    •    Physical violence and arrests. During mass protests, journalists are detained, preventing them from reporting. In some cases, there have been attacks on media representatives.

Persecution of Activists and Independent Journalists

Recent events show a growing wave of repression against those who try to speak the truth. This has become especially evident after the January 2022 protests and amid rising public dissatisfaction with government policies.

    •    Journalists covering protests and corruption scandals have become targets of pressure. Well-known Kazakh journalists and bloggers have repeatedly faced searches, fines, and even prison sentences.

    •    Activists using social media to spread information are persecuted under charges of “inciting social discord” or “discrediting the authorities.”

The Future of Independent Journalism in Kazakhstan

Despite severe restrictions, independent journalists and media continue their work. New online platforms, Telegram channels, and social media have become primary sources of objective information for citizens. However, the risks for journalists remain high.

For real progress in freedom of speech, Kazakhstan must:

    •    End the criminal prosecution of journalists and activists.

    •    Ensure free access to information, including lifting bans on independent media.

    •    Guarantee the independence of the judiciary so that journalists can work without fear for their safety.

For now, independent journalism in Kazakhstan remains under threat, and repression continues to intensify. However, growing public pressure and international attention could play a key role in protecting freedom of speech in the country.
